This came about because after an amazing meal at what we were told is one of the best dim sum places in the city, my friends and I needed to get our blood flowing again. So off we went to a massive park that was busy in a way that only China can be busy. While old men gambled and old women played cut throat hacky-sack games, a lion dance instructor was teaching his students, and a Cantonese Opera rehearsal was in full swing.
China can be really frustrating and hard to understand. As a foreigner, you never really will get it. But this was one of my lightbulb moments. A flicker of comprehension. China is a commercialized, dirty, crazy and often questionable place. But there is a beauty that has not been touched by corruption or the crazed desire for money and power. The ancient culture that comes to mind still lives and breathes in its own way. And that's something that you can see just by taking a walk in a park.
