I’ve been in China for just five days now and there have been plenty of things that have inspired culture shock already. I am so appreciative of the fact that I live in a very safe city, because I'm pretty wide-eyed all the time.
My favorite incident so far was when I went to a store to buy some fruit. After I paid for a few apples, the owner of this tiny shop walked up to me, placing a huge bunch of bananas in front of my face. He was gesturing for me to take them. I’m sure I looked ridiculous as I looked back and forth between him, the bananas, and the girl who checked me out, wondering why in the world there were 8 bananas in my face. The girl took charge of the situation saying “No money! Take bananas!” Protesting would have clearly been pointless.
I later explained this scenario to a co-worker who shrugged and said “I guess they’re Chinese welcome bananas!”
So we will just assume that I am officially welcome in Foshan. That or maybe I look like I need potassium. But we’ll stick with the former.
Real updates to follow soon! Hope you're all well!
